Opened in 1853, Senje coal mine (Senjski Rudnik) could be considered as a birth place of modern industry in Serbia. Senje Coal Mine is the Serbian first modern coal-mine. It is also known as ‘Alexander’s Shaft’ because it was opened during the reign of the Serbian Prince Alexander Karadjordjevic. For a long period, 1870 – 1950, it was the biggest resource of coal, so important for railway traffic. Today, it is in serious economic decline but many old mining machines, mining railway and architecture has been still preserved. There is a small museum in Senje Coal mine, and it is planned to build an open air museum of mining. It will be extremely exciting to visit mining pits.
