The original structure was constructed as part of the defense system against Venetian naval incursions in 1659 by Hatice Turhan Sultan. The fortress was utilized during the Gallipoli campaign in World War I and severely damaged by artillery fire. It was maintained as a Turkish naval outpost until spring 1997, since when it is open to public access and currently the focuses of a restoration project aiming at the re-use of the structure as an open-air museum.
