The Apostle Paul came to Athens in 52 AD to spread the teaching of Jesus. Among the citizens who listened to his gospel was Dionysios Areopagitis or St Denis, who was the first to convert to Christianity and because of that was later canonised. The beautiful Catholic church on Panepistimiou Street is named after him. With its slender columns and elegant arches it is a superb example of the 19th-century architecture in Greece.
