This breathtaking national park was formed by glaciers and is traversed by rivers and underground streams. Along the Tara river canyon, which has the deepest gorges in Europe, the dense pine forests are interspersed with clear lakes and harbour a wide range of endemic flora.
Durmitor is a mountain area of dramatic and diverse landscape, certainly one of the most exciting natural areas of the Balkan Peninsula, real Natural World Heritage
Although a high mountain region, Durmitor was well settled from the early epochs. There are ruins of some medieval fortifications; among them are remnants of Pirlitor, the place where famous Duke Momcilo lived and riding his winged horse Jabucilo.
Like gems, the most beautiful parts of Durmitor, are lakes, known as the Mountain Eyes.
