The earliest layer in the Neolithic settlement is dated to 7000B.C. In addition to the early dating, the settlement is interesting for its large size, the density of occupation and the spectacular wall paintings in the interior of the houses.
It was found in 1958 by the British archaeologist James Mellart. In 1995  an international team of archaeologists led by Ian Hodder, Mellart's student, continued with the excavations and researches at the site.
