Cetinje is a small city, but proud historical capital of Montenegro. Cetinje became a capital of Zeta (today’s Montenegro) in 1482. It was Montenegro’s royal capital and seat of throne, orthodox religious centre, but also a cultural and educational centre of Montenegro for five centuries. Today, it is a seat of the Montenegrin national cultural institutions, numerous museums, Archive and many others.
Cetinje has a rich publishing and printing tradition. The printing house of Crnojevici (1492 – 1496) published first printed Cyrilic books, less than only three decades after Guttenberg’s revolutionary print. It is one of the most important Montenegrin contributions to wider Serbian culture, as well as culture of other Orthodox peoples in South-Eastern Europe.
