The fort of Kljuc is located above the left bank of the Sana river, overlooking the contemporary town of Kljuc. At this site, at an altitude of 521 m, in a position with outstanding natural defenses, there was an ancient fortress (located at the intersection of two ancient roads).
The time when the medieval fort of Kljuc was founded could only be guessed at – it was one of the oldest forts in Bosnia and Herzegovina, built sometime during the 13th century.
The fort of Kljuc is mentioned expressly for the first times in 1322 in the Charter of ban Stjepan II Kotromanic. The last Bosnian King Stjepan Tomasevic tried to find refuge in Kljuc, but he was captured and imprisoned.
The fort of Kljuc is and elevated fort built before the time of firearms, but through time certain parts of the fort or its buildings were adapted to the use of firearms.
