Among the several preserved Medieval monasteries in the vicinity of Prilep, the monastery dedicated to St. Nicolas (near the village of Manastir) is the oldest one. An inscription on the southern wall of the naos commemorates the year in which the church was built, 1095, commissioned by the monk Alexios, the relative of the Byzantine emperor, Alexius I (1081-1118), the founder of the Comnenian dynasty. As a significant example of 13th century Byzantine wall painting, the church of St. Nicolas is testimony of the "golden age" of the Byzantine culture. Most of the buildings composing the monastery complex were destroyed in the First World War. One of them was renovated between the two Wars.
