Medugorje is located in Southern Herzegovina, near the town of Citluk. It is one of the most important and most visited pilgrimage sites (shrines) in the world of Roman Catholicism. Pilgrims come to honour the appearance of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The Blessed Virgin Mary or Our Lady, as she is called in this area, appeared for the first time to children – two boys and four girls – on 24 June 1981 in the Bijakovici village of the Medugorje parish.
Since the sightings of religious figures are not usual in the contemporary world, Our Lady of Medugorje elicited reactions from believers around the world who came to visit the site, that is to say, more than 25 million pilgrims have since visited Medugorje.
