The first settlement in the area dates back to 5 000 B.C. However, except for monuments dated to the 13th century Principalities period, the town owes is development to the 18th, 19th and early 20th centuries, reflected in the presence of Islamic commercial and administrational buildings and monuments. The architectural characteristics of the residential settlement belong to late 19th and early 20th centuries, with a fine selection of traditional half-timber houses. The region is also famous for its natural beauty, composed of mountains, lakes and rivers, and is a winter sports center. The city is also famous for its traditional handcrafts.
