Amasra name derives from the Queen Amastrys. It was known as Sesamos until 3rd century BC. It was a colony of Phoenicia (12 century BC) and Miletos (7 century AD) later she was ten center of Symoikismos Union of Cites.
During the Roman period (BC70), Amasra was the capital of Paphlagonia. Later she was the capital of Bithinya. During the Byzantine period, she was a Geneose colony (1261-1460 AD).
Amasra was always alive throughout the history as in important military base, harbour city and trade center.
Amasra is the town which hasn’t still discovered its historical natural mysteries and beauties just for 3000 years is looked like a "Sleeping Princess"
The selected cultural values, which comes from Roman Geneoese and Islamic periods till today, are just like the summary of the ancient time in the history although it is effected by the wars and earthquakes.
The castle, the church basilica, Roman Road connecting Amasra to Sinop, Gerede and Filyos, Kemerdere Bridge, Rock-cut caves on the Hill of Aya-Yorgi, The theater, Acropolis, Necropolis, Underground Galleries, Islamic Bath and Houses and museum are bringing to our eyes the magnificent history of Amasra.
