The monastery devoted to Archangel Michael was built like a fort at the edge of a cape lying on the south-east part of the island of Thassos. According to the tradition it was founded by the monk Lukas form Thassos in 830 at the site of a holy water spring. Later in the 13th century a golden imperial bull says, that the site of the monastery was a dependency of the Mount Athos monastery of Filotheos. Today the monastery includes the Catholicon, built in 1834, cells and rooms for guests. A room for embroidery of canonicals, a workroom and exhibition of hagiography still operate in the monastery. There ars also two chapels dedicated to St Ephraim from Syros and St Gerasimos from Cephalonia. One can see the Holy Nail kept in the monastery.
Today it operates as a convent with 22 nuns living there.
