The complex was built in 1484-1488 and is an example of the Early Middle Ages architecture. It has a mosque, an imaret (soup-kitchen), two hospitals, a medrese (medical school), a primary school, a double hamam (public bath), kitchens, bakery, barns and water mills. This was the most important health institution in the former capital Edirne. The complex was abandoned at the start of the 20th century. Following a restoration in 1993-1997, the hospital now functions as a museum of health and medrese for family health. The Museum of Health received the Best Health Museum in Europe award in 2004.
