The city of Sisak is located southeast of Zagreb where the rivers of Odra and Kupa, and Kupa and Sava meet. Its geographical location and natural beauties influenced the development of the city.
The first to settle here were the Celts who were subsided by the Romans. They built the city of Siscia, which became capital of the Roman province of Panonia Savia. In the Middle Ages, it was a major political and religious centre.
In 1544-1550, a fortress was built to protect Sisak against hostile forces. The builders used the material from the ruins of Sisica. It has a triangular layout and has three round towers at its corners. Today, the fortress is a landmark of the town of Sisak.
