Known during the Roman Empire as Aenona, from the 7th century, Nin was the first political, cultural and religious centre of the early feudal Croatian state, the temporary capital of the Croatian rulers and the standing centre of the diocese. Of Croatian monuments, the Church of the Holy Cross from the 9th century, the ‘smallest Cathedral in the world’ and the Chapel of St. Nicholas from the 11th century stand out.
