The settlement, known as Halicarnassos in Antiquity, has been the cradle of several civilizations and suffered from countless invasions. This important Aegean port was ruled by the Persians, Macedonians, Romans, Byzantines, Seljukids and Knights of Rhodes and several principalities and in 16th century it became part of the Ottoman Empire. The most impressive of its monuments is the medieval castle and the narrow winding roads and white houses with blue windows reflect Mediterranean architectural characteristics; breathtaking bays along the shores welcome sailors. Historian Heredotus was born here, and in addition to monuments dating from various periods, the Mausoleum of King Mausolos of Caria is one of the Seven Wonders of the World.
