The settlement is formed of historic houses based on an organic pattern, surrounding monuments including a churches, mosques, mescids, tombs, caravanserais, hamams (public baths) and fountains, dating as far back as the 14th century. The houses are composed of a stone masonry ground floor and timber-framed upper floor arranged around a courtyard; solid walls face the street at lower levels with wide projections and eaves overhead. The streets follow the topography, providing vistas and sometimes ending in cul-de-sacs. The settlement is also famous for carpets, kilims and weaving.
