Built initially in the XII-XIIIth century, with later additions in the XVth century, the church is among the earliest stone masonry orthodox churches in Transylvania. Its peculiarity rests in the use of roman stones from the nearby former capital of Roman Dacia. The spatial type of the naos is considered to be a merging between old Christian Middle East architecture and Romanesque building skills.
