Archaeologists have discovered in the Mileshevo Monastery remains of buildings dating back to the 13th century. They have found that the monastery was reconstructed several times in the 15th, 16th and 17th centuries. The Mileshevo Monastery was an important religious and cultural centre, with a scriptorium (room for copying manuscripts) and library. Original works of Serbian literature were copied here. The monastery is also a mausoleum: it contains the grave of Saint Sava, which attracts many pilgrims. The monastery church is in the Ras mediaeval style. A significant part of its original frescoes from the 13th century have been preserved to date. They represent gospel scenes, and portraits of the rulers of the Nemanjich Dynasty and of Saint Sava.
