The architecture of this monastery displays an accumulation and blending of cultural layers from the Middle Ages to Late Baroque. The oldest part of the monastery church is influenced by Early Romanesque and Early Gothic architecture. Founded by Franciscan monks in the Middle Ages, the monastery played an important cultural and educational role in the Bachka area for centuries. In 1730–1733, the Franciscans created a university of philosophy, and in the 19th century they taught at local public schools. The repository and library of the monastery house archives containing documents related to the history and work of the Franciscan Order. The monastery remains prestigious and influential among the local Catholic community to this very day.
