The village of Morodvis is situated in the eastern part of Macedonia, 7 km south of the Kochani village. Under the rule of Samuil, in the 10th century, and later, during the Byzantine Empire, Morobisdon was a town of great economical importance, thanks to its geographical location on the road crossing the Struma and Vardar rivers, and thanks to the presence of silver mines in the surroundings. This Early Byzantine town became a bishopric and, for a long period of time, from the 9th until the 15th century, played a significant role as the political and spiritual centre of Eastern Macedonia. During the excavations initiated in 1980, in the central part of the site, known as Crkvishte, an Early Christian underground crypt, dating back to the 5th century AD, was discovered.
