Summit in Romania, June 2007
The follow up summit of Heads of State of Southeast Europe was held June 7 and 8, 2007, in Bucharest and Sibiu, Romania, under the high patronage of H.E. Mr. Traian Basescu, President of Romania and under the aegis of UNESCO and the Council of Europe. The theme of the reunion is Cultural Diversity—a Bridge between Cultural Heritage and the Culture of the Future.
The Presidents of Croatia, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, the FYR of Macedonia, Montenegro, the Director General of UNESCO Koichiro Matsuura, the Secretary General of the Council of Europe Terry Davis, ministers from Albania, Bulgaria, Greece and Turkey and representatives of international organisations - UNESCO, OIF, the Council of Europe and representatives of Republic of Moldova and Hungary attended the high level meeting.
The subject of the Summit continues the line of the previous meetings organised in Ohrid (2003), Tirana (2004), Varna (2005) and Opatja (2006) on regional cultural cooperation. Therefore, the visit of the official delegations in Sibiu - the 2007 European Capital of Culture, marks the importance of developing policies for the protection of the cultural heritage and the materialization thereof in common action.
The participants adopted a final declaration voicing their new commitment. The next annual summit of Heads of State of South-East Europe is decided to be hold in Greece in 2008.
